I am sure lots of you know Neil Wrightson.
He is one of our team of fantastic transplant co-ordinators here at the Freeman
Hospital in Newcastle.
In 2005, with help from the FHLTA, Neil was able to take up
an invitation to speak at a major conference in India. His report
below is fascinating:
A
report on the 51st National Conference of the Indian Association of
Cardio-vascular and Thoracic Surgeons.
I was invited to present a lecture to
the nursing faculty of the 51st National Conference of the Indian
Association of Cardio -vascular and Thoracic Surgeons on the 17th to
the 20th of February 2005.
This conference will provide
opportunities to learn as it has a strong medical, nursing and, scientific
programme, There were sessions on coronary artery surgery, heart valve and
thoracic surgery as well as transplantation.
The invitation to present a lecture on
lung transplantation was a tremendous honour for me professionally and
personally, and reflects well upon the cardio-pulmonary transplant unit and
Freeman Hospital.
The meeting was attended by
cardiovascular and thoracic surgeons, cardiologists, nurses and allied health
professionals mainly from Asia but also from Europe and a small number from the
USA.
My understanding is that small numbers
of cardiac transplants have been performed in India and that there are plans to
expand the transplant programs in several major cities.
This is a fascinating opportunity, which
will allow me to pass on some of our huge transplant experience to new and
developing cardio - pulmonary units in India and across Asia. The presentation
was very well received by several hundred health professionals and stimulated
healthy debate with lots of questions
Having said that they have different
ways of doing things, we think we are very cost and resource conscious! What
would you think about having a heart operation without a heart lung machine and
using an epidural so you don’t feel anything, but you are awake talking to
the surgeon who is performing your bypass graft operation?
As I expected India was incredibly hot,
the cities were chaotic, the traffic and roads amazing, but once I left the city
the scenery was fabulous (see the photo’s: Click on thumbnail for larger image)
